Unlocking the Full Potential of the Honda Civic Type R FL5
The Honda Civic Type R FL5 is an exceptional sports car delivering a formidable 325hp and 310 lb-ft of torque straight from the factory. Yet despite its impressive credentials, the OEM intake system holds the engine back - evident from the restricted engine sound under normal driving, a convoluted air path, and most critically, elevated intake temperatures under hard driving.
Infinity Design set out to fix this completely.
A Radical Redesign
Rather than simply replacing the filter or smoothing the existing path, Infinity Design took a radical approach - a large expanding tube with integrated MAF housing feeding into a completely redesigned airbox with significantly larger volume and an 80% enlarged opening. The front inlet feed cross-sectional area is doubled, providing more than adequate increases in available air.
The system follows the OEM air path but with every restriction eliminated:
- 80% enlarged airbox opening
- Doubled front inlet feed cross-sectional area
- 175mm signature double cone large surface area air filter
- Standalone turbo inlet tube with increased volume and smoother radius to reduce turbulence into the turbo
CFD Validated Development
Multiple prototypes and CFD analysis iterations confirmed the final design produces less turbulence than the OEM system with vastly increased airflow. The result is lower intake temperatures that remain consistently lower under hard driving - allowing the engine to not just improve power output but maintain that power output when it matters most.
Improved in Every Way
- Vastly improved throttle response throughout the RPM range
- Improved low-end torque response from 2,500 RPM
- Engine feels more eager to accelerate under both partial and full load
- More engaging induction sound under spirited driving
- Consistently lower intake temperatures under sustained hard driving
Proven Performance Gains
Dyno tested under strict controlled conditions on an independent Maha MSR500 dynamometer with identical starting oil and coolant temperatures across all runs:
- Stock: 330 BHP (matching manufacturer's quoted figures)
- With Infinity Design Intake: 347 BHP
- Gain: +17 BHP
- Power and torque increases consistently from 2,500-7,000 RPM
- Significant HP and torque gains from 5,500 RPM onwards
These are honest, controlled results with identical run-down losses and ambient temperatures across all tests - no correction factor manipulation, just genuine performance gains.
